Peoria Nutrition Spot

Quick history: Peoria Nutrition Spot is a wellness snack and drink shop off of University in North Peoria. They are mainly known for their refreshers, energy drinks, smoothies, and protein bowls. They also have powders that are available to buy to make your own drinks at home.

My personal experience: First of all, the first thing you notice when you walk in, the owners are incredibly friendly. The main young business owner that talks to most of the customers is always super nice and curious about your day. She just radiates positivity, which I feel like is hard to come by nowadays (she isn't there 24/7, but the other workers I've talked to are also very friendly). It seems like she really enjoys her job and she would rather not be doing anything else, which makes me excited for the experience as well. When it comes to the actual items here, I can't rave about them enough. The energy drinks are delicious and refreshing, and the smoothies they have are usually really flavorful and they have a huge selection (might have to get used to the protein powder taste). Also, as a graphic designer, I really appreciate nice aesthetics, and although their logo and sign outside are pretty bad, it is really cute and atmospheric inside. Everything must have a downside, though, and this one has a big one. The prices are OUTRAGEOUS! I know I said a couple weeks ago that CxT had some high prices, but think about twice as terrible. The last time I went, I got a 32oz smoothie (which yes, is a big size, shown in top right corner of the picture) and it ended up coming to around $15 with tax. It's hard to justify ever going there to eat healthy when I can get a full meal from somewhere else for less than that. Because of this it stops me from ever making this apart of my daily routine. Their rewards system is not very forgiving either, because if I remember correctly you have to go there 8 times (not based on how much you pay) to get a total of $6 off. Hey, if you're in the area, try it out, but I can't imagine a broke college student going here more than a couple times a month.

  1. As much as I love smoothie bowls and all that good stuff, I learned it's best to just make it at home. Because yes all those shops are so expensive. I feel like you're mostly paying just for the service and aesthetic. It's not that hard to make the smoothie bowl and I like that when you're making it, you have the option to customize it. You want more protein in it? You add it in without an additional charge. But that's just my opinion. Also sucks their rewards system isn't that good.

  2. As a "Gym Rat," I was excited to read this after seeing the words: nutrition, energy drinks, and protein. I am not surprised by the high prices of fitness/nutrition places. The first thing you learn after making the gym a daily routine is that consuming 1.7-2.2 grams of protein per body weight is EXPENSIVE. A perfect example is the Barbell' Protein bars in the P.O.D. They are widely considered the best-tasting bar there is. Therefore, they cost you an arm and a leg charging almost five dollars per bar, at least in the P.O.D.
